Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs)

Research published by Capacitybuilders shows that 85% of local voluntary and community sector support providers would be interested in working with a Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) but only 15% have been approached to be involved.

Ministers have asked local authorities and businesses to come together and organise themselves into LEPs - the coalition government's replacement for Regional Development Agencies that will be responsible for stimulating growth across 'natural economic areas'.

Despite the significant economic contribution made by the sector there is no specific requirement for voluntary and community organisations to be involved in the development of LEPs.

It is up to voluntary and community organisations to talk directly to local authorities and businesses and establish the best way to work together. Capacitybuilders’ research notes that membership of most LEPs is yet to be finalised so there are still a range of options for organisations to engage.

The full report ‘Local Enterprise Partnerships and Civil Society Infrastructure’ can be downloaded from the Improving Support website

Civil Partnership Registrations on Religious Premises

The Government has announced its plan to remove the ban in England and Wales on civil partnership registrations being held on religious premises, by implementing section 202 of the Equality Act 2010. This will give those religious organisations that wish to do so the opportunity to host civil partnership registrations on their premises. Because this is a permissive provision, religious organisations that do not wish to host civil partnerships will not be required to do so as a result of this change. The Government will hold a public consultation on the detail of the changes to be made before implementing the new arrangements, to enable all interested parties to comment.

The implementation of section 202 of the Equality Act 2010 is the first part of the Government’s work on the next steps for civil partnerships as set out in the document Working for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality.

The announcement can be found on the Government Equalities Office website
